Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pulverosus ; Latin pulver- , pulvis , -ous suffix.
Etymology: Partly < post-classical Latin pulverosus reduced to powder (1363 in Chauliac), dusty (c1400 in a British source), and partly < its elements classical Latin pulver-, pulvis pulver n. + -ous suffix. Compare Middle French pulvereux, poulvereux powdery (a1506), dusty (1530 in Palsgrave), Italian polveroso dusty (a1313).
Powdery; dusty. Also: able to be reduced to powder.
