Etymology: Apparently a variant of pedaile n. (compare forms at that entry), with unexplained variation of the vowel in the first syllable; perhaps compare Old French putaille degenerate people, rabble (early 13th cent. in Old French; < pute whore (see pute n.) + -aille -al suffix1).
Obsolete.
