Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch putgalg.
Etymology: < Dutch putgalg bascule to raise water from a well (1557 as petgalg ) < put well, pit (see pit n.1) + galg gallows, post (e.g. of a draw-well) (see gallows n.).
Obsolete. rare.
An apparatus for drawing water from a well or pit, consisting of a long pole attached to an upright which serves as a fulcrum, and having a counterweight on the handle; = sweep n. 24.
