Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pulver- , pulvis , -escent suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin pulver-, pulvis pulver n. + -escent suffix. Compare post-classical Latin pulverescere to turn to dust (12th cent. in a British source), to be covered in dust (a1536 in Erasmus).
Now rare.
Tending to become powdery; friable.
