Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin qualitativus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin qualitativus concerned with quality (6th cent.; frequently from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin quālitāt- , quālitās quality n. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Spanish cualitativo (1493 as qualitativo ; beginning of the 15th cent. as †calitativo in sense ‘(of a person) distinguished, noble’), Italian qualitativo (1353). Compare earlier quantitative adj.With qualitatively adv. compare Spanish cualitativamente (early 15th cent. as †calitativamente).
1. Of or relating to quality or qualities; measuring, or measured by, the quality of something. In later use often contrasted with quantitative.
