单词 pulsatilla
释义

pulsatillan.

Brit. /ˌpʌlsəˈtɪlə/, U.S. /ˌpəlsəˈtɪlə/
Forms:

α. 1500s pulsatill, 1600s pulsatil.

β. 1500s– pulsatilla.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pulsatilla.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pulsatilla (1554 in Matthioli; 1557 in the passage translated in quot. 1578; compare also quot. 1571) < classical Latin pulsātus beaten, driven about, past participle of pulsāre pulse v. + -illa -illa suffix; apparently so called on account of the beating of the seeds or the flower of the plant by the wind. Adopted in scientific Latin by Linnaeus (1735) after earlier use by J. Pitton de Tournefort Inst. rei herbariæ (1700) I. 284. Compare French pulsatille (1611), Italian pulsatilla (1561; 1568 in Matthioli).Confusion of this plant with the anemone is mentioned already by Matthioli (compare the note on the botanical relationship between these plants at definition), suggesting that, as with the name of the anemone n., the plant may be so called on account of its beating about in the wind. This is explicitly stated to be so in the following: 1571 P. Peña & M. de L'Obel Stirpium Adversaria Nova 114 Pulsatilla, an Sylvestris Anemone. Huius comosi et tremuli seminum pappi quia huc atque illuc vel levissimo quoque flatu pultarentur, Pulsatillam barbari vocitarunt, Anemonemque.1751 C. Linnaeus Philosophia botanica 166 Pulsatilla, Pulsatione floris vento. Although stated by Tournefort to be a Latinization from Italian (compare also the reference to barbari in quot. 1571), the word is apparently first attested later in Italian than in Latin.
Originally: the pasque flower, Pulsatilla vulgaris, which has finely dissected leaves and bell-shaped flowers. Later (in form Pulsatilla): the genus of plants containing the pasque flower; (also pulsatilla) a plant of this genus, esp. one grown for ornament. Also: an extract or tincture of the pasque flower or other plant of the genus.Valid publication of the genus name: P. Miller Gardeners Dict.: Abridged (1754) ed. 4.Pulsatilla was formerly and is sometimes still classed as a subgenus of Anemone.
