Etymology: Probably < post-classical Latin pulmonia disease of the lungs, pneumonia (although this is apparently first attested later (1570 in a British source in sense ‘phthisis’), earlier currency is suggested by both the Middle English word and the Romance parallels cited below) < classical Latin pulmōn- , pulmō lung (see pulme n.) + -ia -ia suffix¹. Compare Middle French poulmonie , Middle French, French pulmonie pneumonia (13th cent. in Old French as polmonie in an apparently isolated attestation, subsequently from 1561), disease of the lungs (1680; now rare), Spanish pulmonía (a1500 as †polmonia ). Compare later pneumonia n.The form peripulmonia in quots. a1425, c1450 is apparently an alteration of peripleumonia n. by association with post-classical Latin pulmonia.
