1971 Courier-Mail (Brisbane) 16 Jan. 8/1 Professor Burnstock and colleagues..have just published a paper presenting evidence that this third type of autonomic nerve fibre acts by releasing..a purine nucleotide. Because of this they tentatively propose to call the nerves ‘purinergic’.

Evidence has recently been presented that the transmitter substance released from these nerves may be ATP or some related purine nucleotide.
