Etymology: < Hebrew pūrīm Jewish festival to commemorate the defeat of Haman's plot to destroy the Jews (specific use of plural of pūr lot, a foreign word (perhaps Assyrian or Persian) explained in Esther 3:7, 9:24, as equivalent to Hebrew gōrāl lot), originally via post-classical Latin Phurim, plural (Vulgate).The name derives from Haman's casting lots to fix a date for his planned destruction of the Jews.

A lesser Jewish festival held in spring, on the 14th or 15th day of Adar, to commemorate the defeat of Haman's plot to destroy the Jews (as recorded in the book of Esther).There are also several special or local Purims, in imitation of the original festival.
