释义

purgeableadj.

Brit. /ˈpəːdʒəbl/, U.S. /ˈpərdʒəb(ə)l/
Forms: 1600s– purgeable, 1900s– purgable.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: purge v.1, -able suffix.
Etymology: < purge v.1 + -able suffix. Compare Middle French purgable , purgeable that can be cleaned (1585), (of a defendant) who can be acquitted (1589 in legal use). Compare earlier purgable adj.The form purgable in modern use shows an affricate pronunciation (//), and is hence simply a spelling variant of this word rather than later evidence for purgable adj.
Capable of being purged (in earlier use, chiefly corresponding to purge v.1 1).
