Etymology: < classical Latin pūrgāmentum means of cleansing or purifying, that which is cleaned away, rubbish, filth < pūrgāre purge v.¹ + -mentum -ment suffix. Compare Middle French purgament faeces (1555 in an apparently isolated attestation), Spanish purgamiento expiation of sin (late 12th cent.), cleansing of the body of waste material (late 14th cent.). Compare earlier purgement n.In sense 1b apparently by analogy with excrement n.² beside excrement n.¹ Sense 3 probably reflects a misapprehension of quot. 1605 at sense 1a.
