Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pullulatio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pullulatio propagation (late 2nd cent. in Tertullian), development (3rd cent.), sprouting, growth (4th cent.) < classical Latin pullulāt- , past participial stem of pullulāre pullulate v. + -iō -ion suffix1; compare -ation suffix. Compare Middle French, French pullulation action of springing up (1566 in Middle French; apparently not attested in this sense after early 17th cent.), (of animals) rapid propagation (1758), abnormal proliferation of tissue (1869 in Littré), Italian pullulazione (1308; rare).
