Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pullastrae.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pullastrae, former group name (C. J. Sundevall 1836, in Kongl. Vetenskaps-Acad. handlingar 1835 59), plural of post-classical Latin pullastra (former reading, e.g. in 16th-cent. editions, at Varro Res Rusticae 3. 9. 9, where modern editions read pullitra ) young hen, pullet ( < classical Latin pullus (see pull n.2) + -astra , feminine of -aster -aster suffix) + -ine suffix1. Compare earlier pullastriform adj. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (pulæ·strəin) /pʊˈlæstraɪn/.
Ornithology. Obsolete.
Of or relating to a former group Pullastrae of birds, which originally comprised the pigeons, curassows, lyrebirds, and turacos, and later the pigeons, curassows, and megapodes.The scope of the group was redefined by W. Lilljeborg 1866, in Proc. Zool. Soc. 11.
