Pure Land sect
Designating a form of Mahayana Buddhism practised in East Asia, whose adherents seek rebirth in the untainted transcendent realm associated with Amitābha (known in Japan as Amida) as a step towards perfect enlightenment and Buddhahood, as in Pure Land Buddhism, Pure Land school, Pure Land sect. Cf. Amidism n., Jodo n. 1. [Partly after Japanese Jōdo-shū Pure Land sect (see Jodo n.); the development of Pure Land Buddhism from a general practice into a distinct sect is a Japanese innovation.]
