Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pseudechis.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Pseudechis ( J. G. Wagler Natürliches Syst. der Amphibien (1830) 171) < ancient Greek ψευδ- pseudo- comb. form + ἔχις viper (see echites n.), probably after German †Trugschlange (1830 in the same source, or earlier).

Zoology.

A genus of Australasian snakes of the family Elapidae, which consists of large, smooth-scaled venomous snakes, some of which can flatten the neck like a cobra when threatened, and comprises the black snakes and the king brown snake ( Pseudechis australis); (also pseudechis) a snake of this genus.
