Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ψαμμο-, combining form (in e.g. ψαμμόγεως with a sandy soil) of ancient Greek ψάμμος sand, of uncertain origin, perhaps a popular formation; compare -o- connective.Apparently earliest in psammophilous adj. Compare earlier German Psammoma psammoma n., and compare also earlier psammurgical adj., psammite n., Psammophis n. Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek origin.
Of, relating to, or resembling sand.
