Etymology: < pure adj. + land n.1, after Chinese Jìngtǔ (already in Middle Chinese; compare jìng clean, pure, and earth, land) and Japanese Jōdo (see Jodo n. and the discussion at that entry). Compare earlier Jodo n.

Designating a form of Mahayana Buddhism practised in East Asia, whose adherents seek rebirth in the untainted transcendent realm associated with Amitābha (known in Japan as Amida) as a step towards perfect enlightenment and Buddhahood, as in Pure Land Buddhism, Pure Land school, Pure Land sect.
