Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian procello.
Etymology: Apparently < Italian procello (see note), of unknown etymology. Perhaps compare earlier procer n. The β forms apparently arose by analogy with names of similar instruments, e.g. pincers (see pincer n.), tweezers n., etc.Although Italian procello is apparently not recorded in dictionaries of the language, and its further etymology is unknown, the following apparently shows occurrence of such an Italian word in an English context (alongside other names of instruments used in glass-making):1662 C. Merrett tr. A. Neri Art of Glass 247 The Master workman..with his ponteglo sticks the Glass and scalds it, and with his passago makes the boul of the Glass, then with his procello makes it hollower and more capacious.
Glass-making.
With singular and plural agreement. A tong-like tool used for shaping a glass vessel or object which is being rotated on the end of a pontil rod.
