Origin: A borrowing from Virginia Algonquian. Etymon: Virginia Algonquian poughkone.
Etymology: < Virginia Algonquian poughkone the plant Lithospermum vulgare; compare Unami Delaware pé·kɔ·n bloodroot.Compare the following example of the Virginia Algonquian word in an English context:c1612 W. Strachey Hist. Trav. Virginia (1953) App. A 197/1 Poughkone, [v.r. Poughcone], the red paint or dye.
Any of several plants of eastern North America whose roots were used by North American Indians as a source of dyes; esp. Lithospermum canescens (family Boraginaceae) and bloodroot, Sanguinaria canadensis, which both yield a red dye, and goldenseal, Hydrastis canadensis, which yields a yellow dye; frequently with distinguishing word. Also: a root or pigment obtained from any of these plants.
