Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French psalmistre.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman psalmistre, salmistre (mid 12th cent.), apparently variants (with excrescent r ) of psalmiste (although this is first attested slightly later: see psalmist n.). In later use probably interpreted as showing -er suffix1.
Obsolete.
A singer or composer of psalms; a psalmist; spec. †the composer of the Book of Psalms (obsolete). Also in extended use.
