Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French prétendu.
Etymology: < French prétendu (1762 in this sense), use as noun of past participle of prétendre (see pretend v.).Not fully naturalized in English. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982 ) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (pretaṅdü) /pretɑ̃dy/.
Now rare.
An intended husband or wife; a fiancé or fiancée.
