Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pré-salé.
Etymology: < French pré-salé salt meadow at the seaside where sheep are pastured, sheep reared on this salt meadow, flesh of such sheep (all 1732) < pré meadow (see pree n.1) + salé salted (12th cent. in Old French as salee (feminine singular)), use as adjective of past participle of saler to salt (see salad n.).
A salt meadow, spec. one on which sheep are reared (chiefly attributive in pré salé mutton). Hence: the flesh of sheep reared on a salt meadow.
