Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Bedford.
Etymology: Apparently < the name of Bedford, the county town of Bedfordshire in the east of England. The expression Bedford cords is first attested in a German context (from 1810).According to a report of a trade fair in Leipzig in 1810, Polish cloth merchants gave English-sounding names to their products, such as Bedford cords and Imperial cords, reflecting the prestige of English cloth production at that time.
Bedford cord, a woven fabric with prominent cords running in the direction of the warp. Hence in plural, trousers made of Bedford cord. Also elliptically Bedfords.
