Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πρυτανεία.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πρυτανεία presiding division of the Athenian Council of Five Hundred, period of five weeks during which each division presided, presidency of the Athenian senate, office or dignity of prytanis < πρύτανις prytanis n. + -εία -y suffix3, originally via Middle French prytanee, prytannie (a1372; French prytanie).

a. In the Athenian state: the period of 35 or 36 days (a tenth of a year) during which each of the ten divisions, or phyles, constituting the Council of Five Hundred presided (after which time another division took its place).
