单词 prussian blue
释义

Prussian bluen.adj.

Brit. /ˌprʌʃn ˈbluː/, U.S. /ˌprəʃ(ə)n ˈblu/
Forms: 1700s– Prussian blue, 1800s Prooshan blue, 1800s Prosshun blue. Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Prussian adj., blue n.
Etymology: < Prussian adj. + blue n., so called from being accidentally discovered by Diesbach, a colour-maker in Berlin (then capital of Prussia), in 1704, and announced as a pigment in Miscellanea berolinensia (1710) 1 iii. 377).Several chemical compounds similar to or obtained from Prussian blue, and some related terms, derive their names from this compound: see e.g. Prussian acid n., Prussian alkali n. at Prussian n. and adj. Compounds, etc., and also prussiate n., prussic adj., prussous adj. In use in sense A. 2 probably a variant or intensifier of true blue (see true blue adj. 1), perhaps with reference to the strong colour of the pigment. Use of the term in Dickens (in quot. 1837 at sense A. 2) is generally held to be a play on the deep colour of the pigment and the popularity of the Prussians after the Battle of Waterloo. However, quot. 1778 at sense A. 2 shows that use of the term in this sense antedates Waterloo. The following quot. offers an alternative, although perhaps erroneous, explanation of Dickens's use:1899 Westm. Gaz. 30 Aug. 3/2 We have no doubt that the true solution [of ‘my Prooshan blue’] is simple enough. The expression is a reference to a public-house sign common enough in the Pickwickian age, and often pictorially presented, namely, the portrait of the ‘King of Prussia’ in a blue uniform.
