Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Spanish prusiano, gorrión prusiano.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish prusiano (in gorrión prusiano, literally ‘Prussian sparrow’; not dated in dictionaries of Spanish) < Spanish prusiano Prussian adj., apparently with reference to the violet-blue colour in the bird's plumage (compare Prussian n. 4 and Prussian blue n.). N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (prūsi·āno) /pruːsɪɑːnəʊ/.
U.S. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
The varied bunting, Passerina versicolor, of the southern United States and Mexico, the male of which has a deep red and violet-blue plumage.

1890 Cent. Dict. Prusiano, the western nonpareil, Passerina versicolor, a beautiful finch of southwestern parts of the United States and Mexico.., of a Prussian-blue color varied with purplish tints.
