Etymology: < French proxénète broker, person who negotiates a deal (1521 in Middle French), procurer (a1641; c1527 as prosenette ) or its etymon classical Latin proxenēta agent, broker < Greek προξενητής (attested in undated inscriptions) < ancient Greek προξενεῖν to be a public guest or friend, to manage for another ( < πρόξενος : see proxenos n.) + -τής, suffix forming agent-nouns. Compare Italian prosseneta (1433 as prosoneta).

Chiefly historical.

Esp. with reference to France or in classical contexts: a person who negotiates something, esp. a marriage; a go-between, a matchmaker. Also occasionally: a procurer.
