Compare French pouliot (with suffix substitution: see -ot suffix) pennyroyal (a1442 as polliot ), and also Old Occitan poliol , puliol (14th cent.), Catalan poliol (14th cent.). Compare puliol royal n., puliol mountain n.The following earlier attestation probably represents the Anglo-Norman word:a1300 in T. Wright & R. P. Wülcker Anglo-Saxon & Old Eng. Vocab. (1884) I. 555/1 Chaudes herbes..Pulegium, i. puliol, i. hulwurt. It is uncertain whether the following earlier attestation represents the Anglo-Norman or the Middle English word:a1300 in T.
