Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Pulicat.
Etymology: < Pulicat (Tamil Paḻaverkāṭu), the name of a town on the northern coast of Tamilnadu.The manufacture of handkerchiefs in Pulicat is mentioned in Portuguese and other sources from the 16th cent. (see H. Yule & A. C. Burnell Hobson-Jobson (1886) s.v. pulicat). Earlier forms of the place name in English include Pellacata (1611), Paleiacatta (1726), Policat (1727); compare also Portuguese Paleacate (1519), Dutch Paleacate (1616), Palleacatta (1726).
In singular and plural. A type of coloured material, a length of this, or a coloured handkerchief made from this, originally from Pulicat; (hence) a material made in imitation of these, woven from dyed yarn; (also) a checked coloured handkerchief.
