Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French pulcritude; Latin pulchritūdō.
Etymology: < Middle French pulcritude, pulchritude (second half of the 15th cent.) and its etymon classical Latin pulchritūdō (also pulcritūdō) beauty, attractiveness < pulchr- , pulcher beautiful (see pulchrous adj.) + -itūdō -itude comb. form. Compare Catalan pulcritud (end of 13th cent. as pulcritut), Spanish pulcritud (c1500 as pulcritut; compare earlier †pulcritudo (a1400 in an isolated attestation)).
