Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Tswana. Partly a borrowing from Southern Sotho. Partly a borrowing from Northern Sotho. Etymons: Southern Sotho pula; Northern Sotho pula; Tswana pula.
Etymology: < Southern Sotho pula, Northern Sotho pula, and Tswana pula rain (also used as a greeting), principal monetary unit of Botswana.
1. In Sotho- and Tswana-speaking parts of southern Africa: rain. Chiefly as a traditional salute or expression of good luck (rain being associated with wealth and prosperity).
