Etymology: < post-classical Latin provocatrix (Vulgate), feminine form corresponding to classical Latin prōvocātor provocator n.: see -trix suffix. Compare French provocatrice (1683 or earlier; compare Middle French provocateresse (a1537)).Compare also English provocatrice ( < French provocatrice):1976 New Society 3 June 538/1 The Linda in the tv series is a conventionally sexual provocatrice. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (prǫvokēitriks) /prɒvəʊˈkeɪtrɪks/.
