Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French provocateur ; Latin prōvocātor ; provocate v., -or suffix.
Etymology: Partly < Middle French provocateur provocateur n. and its etymon classical Latin prōvocātor person who challenges, challenger, person who exercises a right of appeal ( < prōvocāt- , past participial stem of prōvocāre provoke v. + -or -or suffix), and partly < provocate v. + -or suffix. Compare Spanish provocador (1542 or earlier), Portuguese provocador (1588).
A person who or thing which provokes (in various senses); a challenger, instigator, inciter, irritator; (in later use) spec. = provocateur n.
