Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French provocateur.
Etymology: < French provocateur person who provokes or incites (a person) to violence, disputes, trouble (c1500 in Middle French), person who incites a person or group to violence or to committing an illegal act in the interests of an opposing party (a1829; compare agent provocateur agent provocateur n.) < classical Latin prōvocātor provocator n. Compare earlier provocator n. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (provǫkatȫr) /prɔvɔkatœr/.
A person who provokes a disturbance; an agitator; an agent provocateur (see agent provocateur n.).
