Etymology: Partly < classical Latin prōvīs-, past participial stem of prōvidēre provide v. + -ory suffix2 (probably partly after Middle French, French provisoire provisional, of the nature of a temporary provision (1499 in legal use, 1790 in general use)), and partly < post-classical Latin provisorius that procures, procuring (5th cent.), relating to papal provision (13th cent.), relating to divine foresight (a1547) < classical Latin prōvīsor provisor n. + -ius , suffix forming adjectives; compare -ory suffix2.
