In full Provins rose. A cultivated rose, Rosa gallica ‘Officinalis’, with fragrant, red, semi-double flowers. Later also: any of various other R. gallica cultivars.In quots. a1678 and 1836 confused with the Provence rose, R. × centifolia (cf. Provence rose n. at Provence n. Compounds, province rose at province n. 5).
