Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Psorosperm.
Etymology: < German Psorosperm (J. Müller, 1841 in Archiv f. Anat., Physiol. u. wissensch. Med. 487 as Psorospermien , plural) < ancient Greek ψώρα psora n. + σπέρμα seed (see sperm n.). Compare post-classical Latin psorospermium (1866 or earlier, later adopted in scientific Latin as genus name Psorospermium (1878)).
Biology and Medicine. Now historical.
Any of various unicellular parasites found in an encysted stage in the tissues of a host; (also) any of the organisms which form such cysts, now variously identified as sporozoans (esp. coccidia and gregarines), microsporidians, and myxosporidians.
