Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin psōra; Greek ψώρα.
Etymology: < classical Latin psōra or its etymon ancient Greek ψώρα itch, mange < an alternative form (with different vocalism) of the stem of ψῆν to rub, wipe (see psettaceous adj.) + -ρα, suffix forming nouns. Compare Middle French, French psora (1538), psore (1572).
Medicine. Now historical.
Any of various skin diseases characterized by the presence of scabs or scales, usually with itching; esp. scabies, mange, or (in later use) psoriasis.
