Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin psittacus ; Greek ψιττακός , -ine suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin psittacus or its etymon Hellenistic Greek ψιττακός parrot (see psittac n.) + -ine suffix1. Compare classical Latin psittacinus of a parrot. In sense A. 2 after scientific Latin Psittacinae, subfamily name ( W. Swainson Nat. Hist. & Classif. Birds (1837) II. 300) < scientific Latin Psittacus, genus name (see psittacid adj.) + -inae -inae suffix; compare French psittacin (1827 in Boiste).

1. figurative. Parrot-like; spec. inclined to repeat received ideas, set phrases, etc., without true thought or feeling.
