Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin psīlōthrum, psilatrum.
Etymology: < classical Latin psīlōthrum a depilatory, white bryony (as the root was used as a depilatory; in post-classical Latin also as psilatrum) < Hellenistic Greek ψίλωθρον a depilatory, white bryony < ancient Greek ψιλοῦν to bare (see psilosis n.) + -θρον , instrumental suffix. Compare psilothre n. and the Romance forms cited at that entry.The Middle English forms psilatro , psilotro are after the Latin ablative singular. In β. forms after the Greek word; compare Middle French psilotron (1478 in a translation of Chauliac).
