Etymology: < classical Latin puerpera (see puerperal adj.) + -ous suffix. Compare slightly earlier puerper adj., puerperial adj. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (piuˌə̄·ɹpĕrəs) /pjuːˈɜːpərəs/.
Obsolete. rare.
That gives birth to a child, or brings about childbirth; childbearing.
