Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin puer , -i- connective, -culture comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin puer boy, child (see puerile adj. and n.) + -i- connective + -culture comb. form, probably after French puériculture (A. Caron 1863, in Le courrier méd. 28 Nov. 422; compare quots. 1904, 1938). Compare Italian puericultura (1875; probably after French). Compare post-classical Latin pueri-, combining form (in e.g. puerigenus producing children, 5th or 6th cent.) of classical Latin puer.
