Inflections: Plural pueri aeterni.
Forms: 1900s– puer aeternis (irregular), 1900s– puer aeternus, 1900s– puer eternis (irregular), 1900s– puer eternus.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin puer aeternus.
Etymology: < classical Latin puer aeternus (Ovid: see note; < puer boy (see puerile adj.) + aeternus eterne adj.), after use in a German context by C. G. Jung (see quots. 1916, 19232).The classical Latin phrase appears in Ovid Metamorphoses 4. 17–18: tibi enim inconsumpta iuventa est, tu puer aeternus ‘your youth is not consumed by time, you eternal boy’. In Ovid, this passage is addressed to Liber, the Roman god identified with Dionysos (Bacchus). Iacchus, the patron god of the initiates attending the Eleusinian mysteries (compare quot. 1916), was frequently identified with Dionysos (Bacchus) by ancient Greek and Roman writers (among them Ovid in Metamorphoses 4. 15), apparently due to the fact that Dionysos had an important sanctuary at Eleusis.
In Jungian psychology: an archetype of eternal youth. Also (more loosely): an emotionally or psychologically childlike man.
