Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French provenir; Latin prōvenīre.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French provenir to derive from, come from (1284 in Old French; 15th cent. with reference to the source of revenue; attested earlier in sense ‘to arrive, to be born’ (beginning of the 13th cent. as provaigne , 3rd singular present indicative)) or its etymon classical Latin prōvenīre to come forth, spring into being, be produced, progress < prō- pro- prefix1 + venīre to come (see Venite n.). Compare Spanish provenir (15th cent.), Portuguese provir (15th cent.), Italian provenire (a1294).
1. intransitive. To come as proceeds or produce; to proceed, arise (from any source of revenue or profit). Obsolete.
