Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pseudostoma.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pseudostoma, genus name (T. Say: see quot. 1823) < pseudo- pseudo- comb. form + ancient Greek στόμα mouth (see stoma n.); compare Hellenistic Greek ψευδόστομα false or blind mouth (of a river). Compare later pseudostome n.
Zoology. Now historical and rare.
A former genus of pocket gophers (now called Geomys); a member of this genus.

1852 S. F. Baird Let. 14 May in W. H. Dall Spencer Fullerton Baird (1915) vii. 277 The little quadrupeds promise nicely. The one with white stripe on tail and long hind leg is the Dipodomys, a Californian form. The coyote [sic] with cheek pouches is a Pseudostoma.
2004 L. Warren Constantine Samuel Rafinesque ii. 30 Say had created a new genus Pseudostoma in which he had placed the plains pocket gopher, but Rafinesque..had previously assigned it to the genus Geomys.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pseudo- comb. form, stoma n.
Etymology: < pseudo- comb. form + stoma n. Compare earlier Pseudostoma n.1 and (with sense 2) pseudostome n. 1.
1. Histology. An opening between endothelial, mesothelial, or epithelial cells that lacks the structure of a true stoma; spec. one thought to be filled with processes from connective tissue cells. Obsolete.

The relation between the cells of the membrana propria of the pleura pulmonum and the endothelium of the surface is similar to that..in other serous membranes, the cells of the propria throwing out processes, which project between the endothelial elements of the free surface, thus forming pseudostomata.
