Origin: Formed within English, by blending. Etymons: pseudo- comb. form, philosopher n.
Etymology: < pseudo- comb. form + -sopher (in philosopher n.). Compare Hellenistic Greek ψευδόσοϕος falsely wise (see pseudosoph n.), post-classical Latin pseudosophus (first half of the 19th cent. or earlier in the passage translated in quot. 1951, an inscription in memory of Galileo Galilei in Arcetri, a suburb of Florence). Compare earlier pseudosoph n., pseudosophy n.In quot. 1951 after post-classical Latin pseudosophus (see above).
