Etymology: Perhaps < nonstandard Nepali poyā in tin-poyā three-ply, misunderstood as the name of the fibre involved; compare Nepali poyo (also in standard form payo) bundle of fibres twisted into a rope.

The fibre of the shrub Maoutia puya (family Urticaceae), native to Nepal and neighbouring regions of eastern Asia, used for cloth, cordage, etc.; the plant itself.
