Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a Swedish lexical item. Etymons: Greek πτύγματ- , πτύγμα , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πτύγματ-, πτύγμα fold, anything folded (see ptygma n.) + -ic suffix, after Swedish ptygmatisk (J. J. Sederholm 1907, in Bull. de la Comm. Géol. de la Finlande 23 89).
Geology.
Designating a highly sinuous folding, for example of granitic layers and veins in certain gneisses and migmatites; (also) displaying such folding.Originally used by Sederholm in a somewhat broader sense.

The term was later restricted by Sederholm (1926) to those tortuous quartzo-felspathic veins, which occur in areas of granitization.
