Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Protracheata.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Protracheata, former class name < pro- pro- prefix² + Tracheata (see tracheate adj.); so called as representing the supposed ancestral form of all the tracheate Arthropoda (i.e. insects, myriapods, and most arachnids).

Zoology. Now disused.

With singular agreement: (in Gegenbaur's classification) a class of animals (equivalent to the phylum Onychophora) containing the single genus Peripatus (cf. Peripatus n.²), which he regarded as an arthropod. With plural agreement: animals of this class collectively.
