Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: proto- comb. form, vertebra n.
Etymology: < proto- comb. form + vertebra n. In sense 1 after German Urwirbel ( C. G. Carus Ur-theilen des Knochen- und Schalengerustes (1828) 47).
1. Zoology. In the morphological theory of C. G. Carus: a rib, considered as an element of the first set of ‘vertebrae’ (the vertebrae and the limb bones being considered the second and third sets respectively). Obsolete.

1861 New Amer. Cycl. XIII. 253/2 He [sc. Carus] makes what he calls proto-, deuto-, and trito-vertebræ; the 1st (ribs) enveloping the body and its viscera in relation with vegetative life; the 2d (vertebræ) protecting the nervous system; and the 3d (limbs) becoming the osseous framework which sustains the muscular and locomotive organs.
2. Embryology. Each of the segments of the embryonic mesoderm which subsequently develop into the vertebrae and associated muscles. Formerly also: †a myotome, regarded as having a similar role (obsolete). Now rare.
